Apps for Integrating Technology in the Science Classroom
Technology and science go hand in hand so there’s no better place to integrate technology than the science classroom. Here are my favorite apps for getting in touch with your inner Sheldon.
The Elements: A Visual Exploration (iOS and MAC) $13.99
Enjoy a rich, interactive periodic table with this app based on the book, The Elements, by Theodore Gray. Rotate and manipulate images, read interesting stories of the history and uses of each element, and gain access to data from WolframAlpha on things such as the reason diamonds are so expensive or why pennies are now made primarily of zinc instead of copper. This app is a good example of “you get what you pay for”. It’s worth the price!
TED (iOS and Android) Free
Gain access to “ideas worth spreading” presented by the best and brightest in the field of science with this app. Lectures on topics like why we laugh and what ants teach us about the brain are among the 400+ lectures on the topic of science. Inspire and motivate our future leaders with this free app.
EarthViewer (iOS and Android) Free
What did earth look like 250 million years ago? What was the climate like? The latest scientific research on Earth’s 4.5 billion year history are at your fingertips with this app by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This app brings plate tectonics to life allowing users to view shifting continents with data on atmospheric conditions, temperature, biodiversity and more! One of my favorite new features is the ability to track famous fossil finds.
